It happens every year. You go to a holiday party and are suddenly surrounded by cakes, cookies, pies, and amazing things to eat. You don’t notice the lonely vegetable tray down at the end of the table. Make it your goal this year to find that tray first and enjoy a healthful snack before going for heavier foods. Instead of pie or cookies, enjoy something from the fresh fruit tray.
Avoiding alcohol at some holiday gatherings may seem tough, but your body will thank you for it. The empty calories do you no favors. If you decide to indulge, eat first and limit yourself to one or two drinks. Then switch to water. Keep your distance from eggnog. It’s basically like drinking your dessert and it can be easy to overdo it.
If you feel like the temptation will be too much, eat before you go. Entering the festivities already satisfied will make it much easier to pass on rich foods. Choose fruit or veggies if you want something to snack on while at the party.
If you plan to bring something to the party, choose a healthy dish. (For ideas, check out recipes online.) Not only will you have a great, low fat option, everyone else will, too.
Many of us experience pain after Thanksgiving, when we’ve stuffed ourselves so full we can’t move and our clothes are tighter than at the beginning of the evening. Try to avoid that feeling by taking smaller portions, eating slowly, and stopping when you are no longer hungry. Remember, there’s always leftovers.
