An Introduction To Sports Therapy

When we hear the term “sports therapy” we might think it only applies to professional athletes. In reality, sports therapy is an integrated discipline provided by professional therapists. It gained recognition over the years because it is practical, available to people who wish to be active in many ways, and provides effective results.

Here are a few frequently asked questions about sports therapy:

1. What is sports therapy?  Sports therapy is a discipline that incorporates sports and exercise into a patient’s rehabilitation program to improve overall physical health.

2. Is sports therapy only for professional athletes?  Any patient (regardless of age or ability) can benefit from this therapy. Professional athletes, on the other hand, can maximize physical performance with this approach.

3. Is a sports therapist the same as a physical therapist?  Both sports and physical therapists focus on the human body and physiology and both may administer massage and other physical care. However, sports therapists specifically address athletic performance rather than solely regular physical maintenance.

4. What else can a sports therapist do?  These therapists are trained to provide care and massage to address injury and pain. They are also able to assess, treat, and implement individualized programs for patients. They can maximize athletic performance and assist in rehabilitation for anyone.

Sports therapists often work alongside physical therapists to develop a specialized program for patients, depending on age, activity level, site of injury, and other important physical factors.

After speaking to your general physician (GP) about physical therapy, seek help through a treatment Centre that can determine the right kind of program you need. No two programs should be alike; there is no “one size fits all” therapy for each patient.

At Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centres of Ontario, our staff will formulate a proper rehabilitation plan for your needs. To schedule an appointment, please refer to our list of centres and give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you!
